Fraunhofer IPSI (FhG-IPSI)The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Foerderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. (Fraunhofer Society for the Advancement of Applied Research) is Europe’s leading research organization for applied research. Work focuses on specific tasks across a wide spectrum of research fields. Where systematic solutions are required, several institutes collaborate on an interdisciplinary basis. Fraunhofer IPSI (Integrated Publication and Information Systems Institute) was founded in 1987 as an institute of the former GMD (German National Research Center for Information Technology), which was merged with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in July 2001. It focuses its research and development activities on information processes in the age of mobile, digital "seamless communication". IPSI conducts basic and applied research in the area of information technology with special emphasis on multimedia information, and knowledge management, and workspaces of the future. IPSI's research groups concentrate on themes such as: corporate management and learning, information storage and structuring using XML, mobile IP, data security in multimedia (watermarking), modern workspaces based on an integrated design of real and virtual worlds (roomware) etc. There are three Competence Centers in IPSI: the XML Competence Center, the CSCL Competence Center (Computer Supported Cooperative Learning), and the C4M Competence Center (Security in Digital Media). There are very close ties to the Technical University of Darmstadt, where IPSI's director Professor Erich J. Neuhold teaches. Fraunhofer-IPSI has participated in a number of international projects (funded by the European Commission) and national (industry funded) projects during the last few years, for example: COLLATE, SCHOLNET, INNOVANET, SAVANT, XML-KM, HERMES. Furthermore IPSI has also participated in designated European working groups concerned with multimedia information retrieval (MIRO), evaluation of interactive multimedia information retrieval systems (MIRA), and digital libraries initiatives (DELOS and GLOBAL INFO).
