Museums, Libraries and Archives Council

Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) is a strategic agency funded by the UK Governmentís
Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Its objective is to provide the strategic leadership,
advocacy and advice to enable museums, archives and libraries to touch people's lives and inspire their
imagination, learning and creativity.

MLA undertakes a wide range of tasks, but those of specific relevance to BRICKS include:

  • implementation of a £70m funding programme to create a 'hub' in each of the nine English regions,
to provide leadership in museum practice and improve standards in the museums sector.
  • developing the Peopleís Network project, which connected all the UKís public libraries to the World Wide
Web by 2002, is enabling training for all public librarians and managing a £50m programme to create a wide
    range of digital content
  • managing the Portable Antiquities Scheme, which is developing a network of finds advisers, recording
archaeological discoveries by metal detector users across the country, and making the information available
    through the www.finds.org.uk website
  • implementing a Collections Development strategy, which will include the development of web-based
resources to support the management of collections
